you don't get harmony when everyone sings the same note!

The Westmont Joyful Voices Show Group is under the sponsorship of the Westmont, IL Park District

Since 2002 we have entertained tens of thousands of seniors at numerous venues. Our past and current membership count of over 150 singers has enabled us to accomplish this. Our goal is to provide great fun filled shows for both ourselves and all our senior audiences.

Our retired singers range in age from 60 to 95! They are residents of nearly 20 local surrounding towns in DuPage and Cook Counties.

Fun but informative rehearsals

Our rehearsals meet once a week on Tuesdays from 1:00 – 2:30 at the Westmont Park District. Refer to our calendar for rehearsal dates and performances.

A Joyful Voices Show Group would not be complete without joyful rehearsals. Our rehearsals always start with a recognition of birthdays, a few jokes, and always updates on current Chorus News.

Our music director, Jim Molina, will lead the group in a vocal warmup and away we go! Each song is given appropriate time for each group to know their parts well. All music is posted online with parts recorded for all singers to practice with, thereby making the learning much easier.

— Our Mission

Our mission is twofold. As a member of the chorus we wish to provide a place where healthy singing can develop and where lasting friendships can be made. Afterwards we set out to perform for senior community centers and entertaining them with memorable music and performance!

— Our Vision

Always looking to the future we hope to create concerts where money can be raised to help certain causes. In 2019 we are performing a benefit concert for Alzheimer’s.

— Our Story

Our story started in 2002 and the songs keep playing. This group was founded by Joe Chobot along with Joe VanHootegem. Read “Our History” to learn more.

We strive to entertain and inspire

Up to date we have peformed for over 10,000 senior residents, with each show adding more!

Our Joyful Voices Show Group specializes in performing to senior residents. Our musical arrangements of familiar “standards” offer a fresh sound. With a variety of upbeat music and powerful ballads we see smiles on the faces of our audiences and sometimes a few tears. Toe-tapping tunes livens the audience along with vibrant singing.

Our emcee, Joe Vanhootegem entertains the audience with just the right amount of humor fused in with historical facts about the music performed. Our audience walks away entertained and enlightened.

— Our Songs

Our songs range from Broadway to Popular and always follow a theme for the summer production. In 2018 we sang patriotic music and in 2019 we sang songs from Broadway and Movies. Join us next season to see what we will sing next!

— Our Dances

We pick one song in our set to play as an instrumental. This allows time for our chorus members to invite audience member to dance on the main floor. This part of our show is very unique and brings lots of smiles and warm hearts.

— Our Solos

Chorus members have opportuniteis to sing solos or in small ensembles. Music is always transposed in a key suitable to your voice.

Preparing for the performance

The joy and camaraderie that all the chorus members have with each other is evident in all aspects of the performance. Some members help with sound set up, while others wait for their wireless mic. Other members pass out programs and other members change into costume.

Our humble beginnings

The Westmont Joyful Voices Show Group (formerly The Joyful Voices Chorus) originated in the 1990’s as a small volunteer group of seniors who got together once a week for a sing-a-long at the Westmont Senior Center on Richmond Ave.

Over time they would provide a small choral program at a few retirement centers in the area during the summer months and at Christmas time. In April 2002, Mr. Joe Chobot, a local retired accomplished musician and composer, accepted an offer to become the Director of this singing group.

Joe quickly went into recruitment mode to lure several of his musically talented retired musicians and singing friends during the next few months with a long term plan to build a Show Group comprised of a 3-part harmony chorus, a small band, and a few dancers.

Joe VanHootegem was one of those recruits and he went into administrative mode for Joe to assist with show programming administration, development of show scripts, obtaining large venues to perform at and prepare performance schedules at surrounding Retirement Centers/Villages and Park District Senior Clubs.

In a few short years, this entertainment group grew into a 45-50 member chorus including dancers as well as a band of 6 musicians. In 2007 the name of the Chorus was changed to “The Westmont Joyful Voices Show Group” to reflect the massive changes and improvements that had been accomplished.

Over the next few years, in addition to musical theme shows, several Broadway Musicals were presented in costume and with stage props taking this entertainment Group to a new level of performances.

At the conclusion of the 2017 Season, Mr. Chobot retired from our Group after 16 years of exceptional leadership. Mr. VanHootegem has remained with the Group as its Administrator and performing the same duties with the new and current Music and Choral Director, Mr. Jim Molina.
